What is the ISDN switch off?
An ISDN is a circuit switched telephone network system that allows both voice and data services to be delivered over digital lines simultaneously. It was launched by BT in 1986 as a means to migrate outdated landline technology to digital.
BT announced in 2015-16 that from 2020 you will no longer be able to purchase ISDN lines with the target date of 2025 for the switch off. They later revised this date and ISDN can still be purchased up to September 2023, with a forced migration between April and December 2025.
Why is the ISDN switch off happening?
With technology constantly changing business need to adapt hence the move away from ISDN to IP technology. And because of the ever changing business world BT decided not to invest any more into the ISDN network as it wasn’t going to enhance businesses communications.
What do I need to do to prepare?
First of all, look at your existing telephony set in terms of internet connection. It is important to have a strong internet connection to deliver VoIP. Then look at your existing phone system to see if it can support VoIP.
If it doesn’t, you will need to look at changing this for one that does or move to a cloud based service. If your phone system is relatively new, it will support VoIP and in that case it is just looking at porting the ISDN lines to SIP.
When do I need to start preparing?
Now is the time to future proof your business and make sure you are ready.
Start by looking at your contracts and see when these are due for renewal. If they are due, start looking at the options available to you and make the change away from ISDN. You will need to consider the size of your business in terms of the amount of lines that need to be moved over and if you need to change your phone system.
