Most companies hit by cyber attacks never see it coming.
But they should.
And that’s mostly because they have little to no understanding how severely a hack or data breach can financially harm them.
However, from May next year they won’t be able to use that excuse to their bank or shareholders. This is because the costs will be published as part of the new General Data Protection Regulation’s (GDPR). In fact, we are already aware of financial implications – with fines of up to 20 million Euros or 4% of global revenue. And that’s without the cost of identifying and mitigating the hack or data loss, not only will this damage your company financially, it will also damage your reputation.
There are so many warnings that by now you’d think it was impossible to ignore. Yet the latest news from the Government’s Cyber Health Check makes for grim reading.
Undertaken in the wake of the recent high profile cyber attacks – including TalkTalk, Petya, NotPetya, Barclay’s, RingGo, McDonald’s, the IAAF, Wonga. We could go on… The research highlights that over 60% of businesses are not prepared for a cyber-attack.
There has been a massive uplift in cyber-attacks and data breaches in the last five years. This is due to a massive increase in our dependence on the internet, cloud and business apps on our phone. From buying clothes to doing our banking and paying our bills online. Criminals are wise to this and have identified there is huge financial gain in the theft of data. Be it ransomware, emptying bank accounts or identity fraud. Cybercrime is big business.
After a business has been breached they will spend a small fortune on the latest threat detection and prevention systems. Probably much more than they will ever require in an effort to earn back their customers trust and reputation. At this point it can be too little too late.
The hacker then moves on to the next target. And according to this research there is no shortage of unprotected business. A sitting duck in the eyes of an expert hacker.
Does this include you and your business? Are you an easy target?
Have you questioned your network security in the last week? Have you checked that your current security has been updated this week? Have you provided Cyber security training for your staff?
