The Company

COSLA was established in 1975, but have been standing up for Scotland’s local priorities for over 800 years when they evolved from the Convention of Royal Burghs- once the oldest

representative body in Europe.

Today, COSLA are a councillor-led, cross-party organisation who champions the vital work of Scotland’s Councils and its 1226 elected councillors in order to secure the resources and powers

they need. COSLA work on behalf of councils to focus on the challenges and opportunities they face, and to engage positively with governments and others on policy, funding and legislation.

Objective

Due to recurring network outages and persistent Wi-Fi dropouts affecting productivity and communications at COSLA’s Edinburgh offices, KubeNet was approached to provide a reliable, future-proof solutions. COSLA required a robust, stable, and scalable network infrastructure that would eliminate frequent connectivity disruptions, improve overall network performance, and support the growing needs of the organisation.

KubeNet worked closely with the COSLA team to assess the existing network architecture, identify key pain points, and propose a series of recommendations designed to enhance reliability and optimise the network for future expansion.

The Challenge

COSLA’s Edinburgh office was experiencing frequent network dropouts, causing significant disruption to day-to-day operations. The existing network infrastructure was outdated, with a complex mess of old switches and poor cable management that made troubleshooting difficult and time-consuming.

Additionally, COSLA faced a unique challenge in scheduling upgrades, as their business-critical operations meant that any major network work had to be carried out during business hours,

further complicating the process. The need for a stable, futureproof network solution was clear, but it was vital that this was to be implemented with minimal disruption to their ongoing operations.

Approach and Solutions

KubeNet began by conducting a full network audit of COSLA’s Edinburgh site, thoroughly mapping the existing infrastructure to understand how all devices and systems within the organisation were connected. This detailed assessment allowed our team to identify inefficiencies and areas for improvement that we could act upon. To address the frequent network dropouts and improve management, KubeNet proposed the introduction

of Ubiquiti switches, which offered enhanced reliability, remote support capabilities, and greater functionality.

Following our initial audit, KubeNet significantly streamlined the network by reducing the total number of switches required while ensuring future scalability for additional connections. A detailed implementation plan was developed to guarantee that all necessary ports remained properly allocated to the appropriate switches.

To minimise disruption, KubeNet executed a full rewire of the cabling and replaced the switches during business hours, maintaining 99% network availability throughout the process, and ensuring COSLA’s operations continued uninterrupted during the upgrade.
